Tips for Capturing Stunning Newborn Photos Even if They Won't Sleep

This is one of the most common worries I hear from new parents.
“My baby doesn’t sleep during the day…” “What if they stay awake the whole time?” “What if they cry and we can’t get any photos?”
If you’ve had these thoughts — you’re definitely not alone.
And the honest answer is:your baby doesn’t have to sleep for us to create beautiful photos.

Every baby is different — and that’s exactly how it should be
Some babies arrive to the session and fall into a deep sleep almost straight away. Others stay awake, observing everything around them. Some need extra cuddles, feeding breaks, or just time to settle.
There is no “right” way for your baby to behave.
I don’t expect your baby to follow a plan. Instead, I follow your baby.
There is no rush
One of the most important things I create during a session is space and calm.
There’s no strict timing, no pressure to “get the shot quickly”, no stress if your baby needs a break.
We pause. We feed. We cuddle. We wait.
Because when you feel relaxed, your baby feels it too.
Awake moments are just as meaningful
There’s a common belief that newborn photos must be sleepy, perfectly posed images.
But some of the most emotional and memorable photos come from awake moments:
tiny expressions
curious eyes
the way your baby looks at you
small movements and natural connection
These moments are real. And they matter just as much.
It’s not just about the photos
What truly matters is how you feel during the session.
You don’t need to worry about:
whether your baby will sleep
whether they will cry
whether everything will go “to plan”
There is no perfect scenario we’re trying to achieve.
My role is to gently guide the session in a way that feels calm, safe, and natural — for both you and your baby.
You don’t need a “perfect baby” for beautiful photos
You just need your baby, exactly as they are.
Whether they sleep, stay awake, or need extra comfort —we will create something meaningful.
Because the goal isn’t perfection. It’s capturing your baby’s first days in a way that feels honest, gentle, and real.
If this has been something on your mind, I’d love to know —what worries you most about a newborn session?
