What to Expect From a Newborn Photography Session in Auckland | A Parent's Guide

Booking your baby's first professional photo shoot is exciting—but if you've never done it before, it can also feel a little overwhelming.
Many parents tell me they aren't sure what will happen during the session. Will the baby sleep? What if they cry? What if they need feeding every half an hour? Do we need to tidy the house if we're having a home session?
The good news is that newborn photography is much more relaxed than most people imagine.
My goal isn't just to create beautiful photographs—it's to make the entire experience enjoyable and stress-free for your family.
Here's what you can expect.

Before the Session
Once your booking is confirmed, I'll send you everything you need to know before the day.
We'll talk about:
the best time for your session
what to wear
what to prepare (spoiler: not much!)
whether you're coming to my studio or I've visiting your home
If you've chosen a home newborn session, there's no need to worry about having a picture-perfect house. I bring a portable studio setup with professional lighting, blankets, wraps and carefully selected props. All I need is a small space to work.
When I Arrive
The first few minutes aren't about taking photos.
They're about getting comfortable.
We'll have a chat, I'll meet your baby, and if it's a home visit, I'll set up the portable studio while you relax.
There is no pressure to start immediately.
If your baby has just woken up or is ready for a feed, we'll simply begin whenever they're ready.
Your Baby Sets the Pace
This is probably the biggest surprise for first-time parents.
The session doesn't follow a strict timetable.
It follows your baby.
If your little one needs feeding, we stop.
If they need cuddles, we cuddle.
If they simply want to stay awake for a while, that's perfectly okay too.
Every baby is different, and I've learned over the years that patience always creates the best results.
Some babies sleep through most of the session.
Others prefer to stay awake and quietly observe the world around them.
Both are beautiful.
Feeding and Settling Breaks Are Completely Normal
One of the biggest worries parents have is that feeding or changing their baby will "interrupt" the session.
It won't.
These breaks are simply part of newborn photography.
There's no rush and no pressure.
Sometimes those quiet feeding moments become some of the most meaningful photographs of the day.
Family Photos Matter Just as Much
Although your newborn is the star of the session, I always encourage parents and siblings to be part of the photographs.
Years from now, your baby won't just want to see what they looked like.
They'll want to see who was holding them.
Who smiled at them.
Who loved them from the very beginning.
These family photographs often become the most treasured images in the gallery.
What If My Baby Doesn't Sleep?
This is probably the question I'm asked most often.
The answer is simple:
It's absolutely fine.
While sleepy newborn photographs are lovely, awake babies create beautiful images too.
Wide eyes.
Tiny expressions.
Curious little looks.
They're all part of your baby's unique story.
I've photographed many babies who stayed awake for most of their session, and their galleries are just as special.
There's No Such Thing as a "Good" or "Bad" Baby
Parents often apologize when their baby cries or needs extra cuddles.
Please don't.
Babies cry.
They get hungry.
They need comfort.
That's exactly what newborns are supposed to do.
My role isn't to expect perfect behavior.
It's to create a calm environment where your baby can simply be themselves.
The Session Isn't Rushed
One of the reasons I only take a limited number of bookings is so I never have to hurry.
Beautiful photographs can't be forced.
Some moments need patience.
Some need quiet.
Some simply need time.
When parents realize there's no countdown clock, everyone starts to relax—and that's when the most genuine moments happen.
You Don't Need to Know How to Pose
Many parents worry they'll feel awkward in front of the camera.
Please don't.
You don't need any experience.
I'll gently guide you when needed while leaving plenty of room for natural interactions.
The best images usually happen when you're simply cuddling your baby, sharing a smile with your partner, or admiring your little one without even noticing the camera.
After the Session
Once the session is finished, I'll carefully edit every selected image to create a timeless gallery you'll enjoy for many years.
These photographs aren't just for today.
They're for the future.
For the days when your newborn has become a toddler.
For the years when they're heading off to school.
And one day, perhaps, for your grown-up child to look back and see just how loved they were from the very beginning.
Final Thoughts
If there's one thing I'd love every parent to know before their newborn session, it's this:
There is no such thing as a perfect baby or a perfect day.
Your baby doesn't need to sleep the whole time.
Your house doesn't need to be spotless.
You don't need to know how to pose.
All you need to do is arrive, slow down for a little while, and enjoy these precious first days together.
The rest, we'll figure out together.
