What If My Baby Doesn't Sleep During a Newborn Photoshoot?

If you're thinking about booking a newborn photoshoot, you might already have a few worries running through your mind. What if your baby is unsettled? What if they need feeding every half an hour? What if they refuse to fall asleep, even though everyone says newborns sleep all the time?

It's a very understandable concern. You've probably seen beautiful newborn photographs of tiny babies sleeping peacefully in soft blankets, looking completely relaxed. It's easy to imagine that your own baby needs to behave the same way for your session to work.

But here's something I'd love you to know before you book your newborn photography session: your baby doesn't have to sleep for us to create beautiful photographs.

What if my newborn stays awake?

Newborns have their own little personalities and rhythms from the very beginning. Some babies sleep through much of their photoshoot, while others are wide awake, looking around and taking in everything happening around them. Some drift off for a while, wake up for a feed and then decide they'd rather stay close to Mum or Dad.

All of that is normal.

An awake baby can give us so many lovely moments to photograph. We might capture their curious little expressions, the way they look at you, their tiny fingers wrapped around yours, or the way they settle against your chest. Sometimes their eyes are wide open, and sometimes they look sleepy without quite falling asleep.

These photographs can be just as meaningful as the ones taken while your baby is sleeping. They show a little more of who your baby was at that particular stage, and one day you may love looking back at those tiny expressions just as much as you love the sleepy photographs.

We don't need to rush your baby to sleep

One of the most important things about a newborn session is allowing enough time for your baby to be a baby.

I don't expect your newborn to follow a strict schedule just because we've arranged a photography session. If your baby needs a feed, we can pause. If they need a cuddle, we can take our time. If they need a little help settling, we can slow down and give them that time too.

There is no need to feel that you're holding up the session because your baby isn't sleeping.

I know how much you may already have on your mind during those first weeks. You're recovering, getting used to your new routine and learning what your baby needs. The last thing I want is for your photography session to become another thing you feel you have to get right.

My approach is to follow your baby's cues rather than trying to make everything happen according to a plan. We can work around feeding, cuddling and settling, allowing the session to unfold at a comfortable pace.

What if my baby cries or becomes unsettled?

This is another worry I hear from parents, and it's completely understandable. You might be imagining that your baby will cry throughout the whole session and that you won't get any photographs you love.

If your baby becomes unsettled, we'll take care of what they need first.

That might mean a feed, a nappy change, a cuddle with Mum or Dad, or simply a little time to settle. Sometimes babies need to be held and rocked for a while before they feel comfortable again. We can take those breaks whenever they're needed.

You don't need to apologise if your baby cries, and you certainly don't need to feel embarrassed. Babies communicate in the only ways they know how, and crying is part of that.

Even if your baby has a difficult moment, it doesn't mean the whole session has gone wrong. We can pause, adjust and see what works for them. I can't promise that every moment will be calm or that we'll capture every photograph you imagined, but I can promise that your baby won't be expected to cooperate like a little adult.

Do newborn photos only look beautiful when babies are asleep?

Not at all. Sleeping newborn photographs can be lovely, but they are only one part of newborn photography.

Some of the photographs parents treasure most are the simplest ones: holding their baby close, looking down at their little face, touching their tiny feet or sitting together quietly on the bed.

Your baby might be awake in those photographs. They might be stretching, looking around or snuggling into you. Those little moments are part of your story too.

During a session, we'll have opportunities to photograph your baby on their own, as well as with you and your partner. If you have older children, we can include them too, allowing them to interact with their new brother or sister in a way that feels comfortable for them.

You don't need to recreate a particular photograph you've seen online. We can create images that suit your baby and your family as you are right now.

Should I try to make my baby sleep before the session?

You don't need to put pressure on yourself to make your baby sleep at a particular time.

You can follow your usual routine and make sure you've allowed enough time to get ready without rushing. If your baby needs a feed or a cuddle before we begin, that's absolutely fine.

Every baby is different, and trying to predict exactly when they'll sleep can sometimes create unnecessary stress for parents. I'd much rather you arrive feeling as relaxed as possible than spend the morning worrying that your baby hasn't followed the plan.

If your baby is awake when we start, we'll work with that. If they fall asleep halfway through, lovely. If they wake up again a little later, that's fine too.

We don't need to know in advance exactly how the session will unfold.

What if my baby is already a few weeks old?

You might also be wondering whether you need to arrange your newborn photoshoot within the first couple of weeks, when babies are often sleepier and curl up naturally.

It's true that babies change quickly during those early weeks, and the style of photographs we create can vary as your baby grows. But there isn't one perfect day when newborn photographs have to happen.

If your baby is a little older, we can still photograph their tiny features, their expressions and the way they fit into your arms. They may be more alert and interested in the world around them, which can give the photographs a different feel.

If you're worried you've left it too late, please don't assume you've missed your opportunity. Get in touch and tell me how old your baby is. We can talk about what might work for your family.

A newborn session should feel like time with your baby, not a test

Those first weeks can be a blur. You're getting to know your baby, finding your feet as a parent and adjusting to a completely different daily rhythm.

I don't want your newborn photography session to become another situation where you feel you need to get everything right.

Your baby doesn't need to sleep for the whole session. Your older children don't need to behave perfectly, and you don't need to know how to pose. We can take breaks, follow your baby's needs and make space for the ordinary moments that happen along the way.

Some of the photographs may be of your sleeping baby. Others may show wide-open eyes, cuddles, little stretches or the way you instinctively hold them close. Together, they can tell a much fuller story of those early days.

And years from now, when your baby is no longer quite so tiny, you probably won't be wondering whether they slept for enough of their photoshoot. You'll simply be glad to have photographs of the time when everything was still so new.
