What If My Baby Doesn’t Settle? Newborn Photography Reassurance for New Parents

One of the most common worries I hear from new parents is:
“My baby is very unsettled… will we still be able to do photos?”

The short answer is yes — absolutely 🤍
And you are not alone in feeling this way.
Most parents come into a newborn session thinking their baby needs to be calm, sleepy, or “well behaved” for the photos to work. But in reality, newborn photography is designed to work with babies exactly as they are — not against them.
There Is No Such Thing As a “Perfectly Settled Baby”
Every newborn is different.
Some babies:
sleep deeply for long stretches
settle easily between feeds
are very relaxed during handling
Others:
need more cuddles and movement
wake often
take longer to settle
prefer being held most of the time
And all of this is completely normal.
As a newborn photographer working in Auckland, I’ve seen every type of baby temperament you can imagine — and every single one has resulted in beautiful, meaningful images.
Sessions Are Always Baby-Led
Newborn photography is not about forcing a baby into a schedule.
It is about following their needs.
If your baby needs:
feeding → we pause
cuddles → we slow down
winding → we take time
settling → we go at their pace
There is never any rush.
Some of the most beautiful images happen in those quiet in-between moments — when baby is simply being held, comforted, and safe.
Even “Unsettled” Babies Photograph Beautifully
Many parents are surprised to hear that unsettled babies often create some of the most emotional images.
Why?
Because you naturally see:
real connection between parents and baby
gentle soothing moments
tiny expressions and stretches
authentic interaction instead of posed perfection
These are often the images families treasure most later on.
You Don’t Need to “Fix” Anything Before the Session
A big misconception is that everything needs to be perfect before the photographer arrives.
It doesn’t.
You don’t need:
a perfectly sleeping baby
a perfectly clean house (for home sessions)
a stress-free morning
or a baby who follows a routine
All you need to do is show up as you are.
I take care of everything else.
Why Patience Is So Important in Newborn Photography
Newborn sessions are intentionally slow.
This allows time for:
feeding breaks
settling breaks
cuddles
outfit changes
baby-led adjustments
A calm environment is what allows real moments to happen naturally.
When parents relax, babies usually relax too — but even when they don’t, we still create beautiful, meaningful images.
Home Sessions Make It Even Easier
For many families, a home visit newborn session is the most comfortable option.
There is:
no travel stress
no packing bags
no pressure to leave the house on time
no worrying about baby in the car
Everything happens in your own space, at your own pace.
This is especially helpful when babies are more unsettled or need frequent feeding and settling.
You Haven’t Missed Anything
If your baby is unsettled right now, please don’t worry that you’ve missed your chance.
Newborn photography is still absolutely possible — whether your baby is:
5 days old
2 weeks old
or even a few weeks older
Every stage has its own kind of beauty.
The Most Important Thing
At the heart of every session is not perfection — it is connection.
Your baby doesn’t need to behave a certain way to be photographed beautifully.
They just need to be loved, held, and cared for.
And that is already enough
