Maternity Photoshoot with Partner and Family: More Than Just Pregnancy Portraits
When you think about a maternity photoshoot, you might imagine beautiful portraits of an expectant mum, showing off her growing bump in a lovely dress. And those photographs are certainly a special part of the experience.

But your pregnancy is also a time in your family's story. It's about the two of you becoming parents, your older children waiting for a new brother or sister, and all the little changes happening as you prepare to welcome another family member.
That's why a maternity photoshoot doesn't have to be just about you standing in front of the camera on your own. It can include your partner, your children, and a mixture of individual portraits and natural family photographs.
Beautiful portraits of you
First of all, I always encourage mums-to-be to have some photographs of themselves on their own.
Pregnancy is a unique stage of life, and it's lovely to have a few portraits that celebrate you and your growing bump. You might prefer something elegant and simple, with a flowing dress and a beautiful background, or perhaps something more relaxed and natural.
You don't need to know how to pose or have experience in front of a camera. I'll guide you throughout the session, suggesting simple positions and small adjustments to help you feel comfortable and look your best.
And if you're someone who usually avoids being photographed, don't worry. You're not expected to know what to do. We'll take things at your own pace.
Include your partner in the maternity photoshoot
Pregnancy is a shared experience, even though it's mum who carries the baby. Your partner is part of this journey too, and photographs together can be a lovely way to remember this time before your family changes.
We can take a few classic portraits together, but I also like to capture more natural moments: holding hands, a gentle hug, a hand resting on your bump or simply looking at each other.
You don't need to be a couple who are naturally comfortable in front of a camera. I'll give you some gentle direction, so you don't have to worry about looking awkward or wondering where to put your hands.
The aim isn't to create a series of complicated poses. It's to capture the connection between you.
Maternity photos with older children
If you already have children, they're very welcome to join your maternity session.
For them, a new baby arriving can be an exciting but sometimes confusing time. Including them in the photographs gives you a chance to capture this little chapter before they become an older brother or sister.
We can take photographs of everyone together, some of the children with mum, and a few sweet moments with their growing bump.
Children don't have to sit perfectly still or smile at the camera throughout the session. We can include some playful moments and let them be themselves. Sometimes the most meaningful photographs happen when children are simply being children.
And, of course, we'll also make sure you have some lovely portraits of just yourself.
A mixture of photographs makes a beautiful gallery
One of the things I love about maternity photography is that no two families need exactly the same collection of photographs.
Some mums would like mostly individual portraits, with just a few photographs of their partner. Others want the whole family involved, especially if they already have children.
We can include a variety of images during one session:
Individual portraits of mum-to-be.
Photographs of the couple together.
Natural family portraits with older children.
Close-up details of your growing bump and hands resting on it.
Full-length portraits showing your dress and the setting.
More relaxed photographs of you interacting with your family.
This variety gives you a gallery that feels personal and tells more of your family's story, rather than looking like a collection of identical poses.
What should you wear for your maternity photoshoot?
Choosing what to wear can feel like another big decision, but it doesn't need to be complicated.
I have maternity dresses available for clients to use during their session. You are also welcome to bring your own dress or outfit if you have something special in mind.
For a timeless look, neutral and soft colours work beautifully. Cream, beige, white and other gentle tones photograph well and help keep the focus on you and your family.
If your partner and children are joining you, it's a good idea to choose outfits that complement each other without everyone wearing exactly the same thing.
Before your session, we can discuss clothing and the overall look you're hoping to achieve.
Studio or outdoor maternity photography in Auckland?
You can choose between a studio maternity session and an outdoor photoshoot.
A studio session is a lovely option if you prefer a more controlled setting, simple backgrounds and a classic portrait style. An outdoor session offers a different feeling, with natural light and the surrounding scenery adding atmosphere to your photographs.
If we plan an outdoor session and the weather doesn't cooperate, we can arrange to move to the studio instead.
We'll also choose a location that works well for your family, without needing to drive between different spots during the shoot.
When should you book your maternity photoshoot?
I generally recommend getting in touch before 30 weeks of pregnancy. This gives us more flexibility when choosing a date and helps avoid leaving things too late, when you may be feeling less comfortable or your baby might decide to arrive earlier than expected.
If you're already further along, don't assume you've missed your chance. It's always worth asking about availability.
You can also book a maternity and newborn photography combination if you'd like to capture both stages of your family's journey.
Let's capture this special time in your family's story
Your maternity photographs don't have to look like anyone else's. Whether you dream of elegant portraits on your own, relaxed photographs with your partner, or a collection that includes your children too, we can create a session that feels right for your family.
My approach is relaxed and friendly, with gentle guidance throughout the session. You don't need to know how to pose or worry about whether everyone will look perfect in every photograph. We'll take our time and make space for natural moments along the way.
If you're looking for maternity photography in Auckland, I'd love to hear what you have in mind.
